Malta drilling for blister temperatures ’40 ° C’
Temperatures are expected to rise to a high of 38 ° C this week, with the met office in Luqa warning that this means it will feel like 40 ° C on Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to the office forecastMonday’s high of 36 ° C (which feels like 38 ° C), will rise to 38 ° C in mid-week, and drop to 37 ° C by Saturday.
The UV index will range between 10 and 11 high all week.
Reading a UV index of 11 or higher translates into an extreme risk of damage from unprotected sun exposure.
Health experts advise people to wear UV-blocking sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and protective clothing. People should also reduce their time in the sun and avoid between 10 am and 2 pm.
The island is currently experiencing a wave of sizzling temperatures following a heat dome set across the country on Thursday, which brought elevated temperatures to at least four days.
Last week the authorities urged people to:
- Close the curtains on rooms facing the sun to keep the interior spaces cooler.
- Drink plenty of water to replace fluids lost through sweating and eat more cold foods such as salads.
- Avoid dehydrating liquids. Alcohol, coffee, tea and soft drinks with caffeine can make the situation worse.
- Wear loose-fitting light clothing.
- Avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day – either choose indoor physical activity or do your physical activity in the morning when it’s coolest.
- Never leave anyone in a closed and parked vehicle, especially babies, young children or animals.
- Watch out for vulnerable neighbors or family or friends who may be isolated and unable to take care of themselves and make sure they are able to keep out the cold.
