Thousands of Warsaw residents and tourists took part on Saturday, June 25 in Wianki nad Wisłą. In addition to folk and contemporary music concerts, those willing could weave traditional wreaths or take part in handicraft workshops, and even throw an ax at the target! As we read on the website of the event organizer, Stołeczna Estrada, Wreaths for a family picnic inspired by the Slavic tradition of celebrating Kupała Night, also known as Sobótka. During the joyful fun, the old fortune-telling and dances are established, and the girls played garlands with lighted candles. Wianki on the Vistula try to be included in tradition and modernity – they refer to the ancient Midsummer rites devoted to the elements of water and fire (that we will have to connect with the need to clear the dawn), the power of work in the current state of happenings. The picnic program is dominated by recreation and entertainment, but there is no lack of references to old Polish folk art and culinary tradition.
