The Maltese organization gives a home to the Air Force veteran
U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Christina Travis marked the occasion that on Sunday she received a new home by cutting a ribbon in front of her with others.
“We’ve been volunteering a little bit with the other volunteers so we can see how it has come together, so it’s really nice to see the finished product,” Travis said.
She received home free of charge thanks to the Malta Veterans Appreciation Program, a group that helps veterans with daily needs, such as housing.
“I really didn’t know there were programs like this, so I’m glad it’s gaining exposure and is being part of the next house building,” Travis said. “It’s a beautiful and amazing thing that people do for us. I am very grateful. ”
The home was donated to the veterans appreciation program, and within months, it was completely renovated for Travis and her daughter.
“We find that, typically, our veterans will not ask for help. So we go door to door to find them, or ask other people to please let us know about a veteran, ”said Malta Veteran Appreciation Program founder Renee Farley. “That’s how we found out about our veterans, from a neighbor or friend, who said, ‘hey, there’s a veteran on the road who needs help.'”
With the help of countless volunteers and sponsors, the Malta group plans to continue to help veterans such as Christina and others who are passing away after the service.
“It’s just a matter of where they kind of join the veteran family and stay and give back. Just build and build and build, ”Farley said.
In addition to the house given to Travis on Sunday, the Malta Veterans Appreciation Program plans to build two more homes in the same neighborhood in the coming months.
