Sales in Luxembourg: “They only buy two t-shirts instead of four”

LUXEMBOURG – For the summer sales, which begin Friday in Luxembourg in a context of inflation, traders have not changed their habits.
Will the annual inflation rate, at its highest level since 1984 in Luxembourg, be felt in stores, as the summer sales begin on Friday? While they admit to seeing a change in consumer behavior, many merchants do not seem to have changed their habits. No special operations calculated, therefore, to try to attract customers less inclined to spend since the beginning of the year and the deterioration of the economic situation.
“We prepared these sales like we prepare all the others, nothing has changed,” explains the manager of a ready-to-wear shop in the south of the country. Some, who still want to be optimistic, think that consumers will be happy from Friday and do not consider it appropriate to sell off the price more than usual.
“It’s obvious that the average basket has dropped in recent months. Customers say so themselves. Instead of taking four t-shirts, for example, they only smoke two,” says the manager of another business in Esch-sur-Alzette. “People are paying more attention to their wallets, that’s for sure. We are having a hard time reaching our sales targets, but we have not planned to adapt our promotions to the economic situation, ”says another shopkeeper in a decoration shop.
Like every year, customers who tried to spot the products that were being sold off came up against the same responses from the sellers. “We can’t tell them in advance. Some try to haggle, but nothing helps,” said another saleswoman.
