Armed Forces: “G7 meeting Elmau” – Austria secures its airspace
19 aircraft secure the airspace over Austria during the G7 meeting
Vienna (OTS) – From 25th to 28th June 2022, the air force of the Federal Army will secure the reinforced Austrian airspace on the occasion of the G7 meeting in Elmau (Germany). For this purpose, a flight restriction area was set up over parts of Tyrol. More than 1,000 soldiers and 19 aircraft – 11 fixed-wing aircraft and 8 helicopters – ensure the safety of the event and protect the local population from dangers from the air.
“In order for such a high-level meeting to take place at all, it is necessary to ensure the safety of the event participants, but also of the prominent population. Heads of state and government from France, Italy, Japan, Canada, the USA, the United Kingdom and the host country Germany are expected at the G7 summit. After the successful airspace security operation “Dädalus22″ with Switzerland, the Austrian air force is now also demonstrating its high level of competence in cross-border operations in cooperation with German comrades at the G7 meeting in Elmau. This shows once again how important the air force of the Federal Army is for the security of our country,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.
Since, in contrast to Switzerland, there is currently no agreement with Germany regarding cooperation in the area of cross-border airspace security against uncontrolled aerial threats, there are no flights into the airspace within the framework of the airspace security operation “G7-Treffen-Elmau”. there are airspace.
However, through the use of liaison officers and technical means such as reconnaissance and target allocation radar, radar data is exchanged quickly and unbureaucratically, and the picture of the air situation is thus kept up to date.
In Germany, the police are responsible for monitoring the flight restriction area in near-ground airspace; Specifically, the Bavarian Police Helicopter Squadron.
The air force of the Bundeswehr acts in the form of administrative assistance, for example by providing an air situation picture and using interceptors against fast targets.
Due to Elmau’s proximity to the border, the German G7 planning staff requested support from the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI). The Federal Ministry of the Interior subsequently applied to the Ministry of Defense (BMLV) for the establishment of a restricted flight area. The flight restrictions also apply to civilian drones.
