Green Gen Technologies markets linen bottles
The company Green Gen Technologies, based in Toulouse, is launching its first large-scale production series of spirits bottles made from flax fibers and bio-based resin. A novelty in France.
After seven years of research to find the perfect combination, the company Green generation technologiesbased in Toulouse, launches its first series of linen bottle manufacturing. They will be marketed from September with the release of the new Cognac from the Charente house. A. de Fussignyalready available for presale on the Kisskissbankbank platform.
Linen bottles made in France
Green Gen Technologies manufactures 100% French flax fiber bottles. Indeed, the plant material is grown in Normandy, before being sent to the Hauts-de-France region to be transformed into yarn in the Pas-de-Calais, then braided in the Nord department. All the components are then transported in a workshop in Portet-sur-Garonne to be assembled and former a bottle.
“We are looking to buy a factory in Occitania or New Aquitaine to accelerate the pace of production of bottles of spirits or wine. Up to one million in 2023, up to 30 million in the next few years,” says James de Roany, founder of Green Gen Technologies.
Eco-friendly linen and biosourced resin
No phytosanitary products or fertilizers chemicals are only used for growing flax in Normandy. “It’s a plant that doesn’t need to be watered heavily either,” explains the entrepreneur. As for the used to fix flax fibres, it is “natural and biosourced”. “But the composition is kept secret,” warns James de Roany.
Only the material placed inside the bottle, like a kind of liner in a swimming pool to make it waterproof, is made from recycled plastic. “We have no other choice to have a completely neutral container and meet the food criteria (ability of an object to come into contact with foodstuffs, editor’s note)”, admits the company manager.
The bottle is recyclable. It can also be kept, like a gourd, by consumers, or used as a container for bulk shopping. “Linen is an insulating material, it retains the heat or coolness of liquids for a long time,” he continues.
A limited impact also in terms of transport
In terms of transport, Green Gen Technologies is also trying to limit its environmental impact. Already, car the linen bottle weighs only 80 grams, compared to 380 and 1,100 grams for a glass one. And the lighter the product, the less the vehicles carrying CO2.
Also, because the company limits its distribution, like its manufacture, to French territory. “It would make no sense to produce eco-designed bottles in France to send them to Australia,” admits James de Roany. ” If one day the company comes to go international, this will be done in “multi-local”, says its director. He adds: “That is to say that we will open a factory in the United States for American wines or spirits, for example”.
Alternative to glass
James de Roany’s goal was to find an alternative to using glass bottles. “I have built my entire career in the wine and spirits trade. Except that I belatedly became aware of the ecological impact of glass bottles. Already, because the sand resources used to manufacture the material are limited. Also, because between the ovens heated to 1,450 degrees and the round trips of transport vehicles, the carbon footprint of the bottle production plants is catastrophic,” laments James de Roany. “I do not spit in the soup, I have sold thousands,” he adds.
Green Gen Technologies also manufactures sawdust water bottles
Beyond the containers for wines and spirits, Green Gen Technologies has also imagined a 50 centiliter gourd designed from the sawdust and resin waste, extracts of beech and spruce grown in Germany. These materials are then transported to a factory in Bergerac to manufacture the gourd.
“The advantage of this product is that the two finishes tinted from natural dye unscrew to facilitate washing the bottle and to avoid the proliferation of bacteria and the appearance, after a few months, of bad smells”, analyzes the Toulousain.
