Berlin/Leuna/Schwedt (dpa) – According to a media report, the Union faction in the German Bundestag is demanding support from the federal government for the eastern German refinery sites that will be particularly affected by the foreseeable end of oil imports from Russia. According to the editorial network Germany (RND), the federal government should ensure both the supply of crude oil to the refineries in Leuna and Schwedt and the security of supply of East Germany with fuel, according to a motion that the CDU and CSU want to bring to the Bundestag during this week’s session .
The federal government must also support the eastern German states in becoming a leading location in the production of electricity-based kerosene from renewable energies, the Union MPs added. The Leuna and Schwedt locations and the existing pipeline network offer good conditions for the airports Leipzig/Halle and Berlin to “enable a European leadership role on the way to CO2-neural air traffic”.
The Leuna refinery in Saxony-Anhalt and the PCK refinery in Schwedt, Brandenburg, obtain Russian oil from the “Druschba” pipeline. The federal government will refrain from oil imports via this pipeline as part of the EU embargo against Russia. Alternatives are still being sought, especially for Schwedt.
