The strawberries are now “laughing” bright red from the local ones, which are underlaid with straw fields. “Now and in the next two to three weeks is the main season for strawberries. The current weather without extreme temperatures is ideal for uniform ripening. Now the strawberries are large, juicy and aromatically sweet,” emphasizes Herbert Muster, head of the fruit-growing department in the Chamber of Agriculture (LK) Styria.

Incidentally, the queen of berries has been around in Styria for much longer than until July. The expert: “Our fruit growers also cultivate later varieties, in later locations and regions and in protected foil houses, so that Styrian strawberries will be available until autumn.” The strawberries not only ring in the summer, but also the berry season: In addition to strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and currants will also ripen in the next few weeks. Sample: “From June to September, the selection of fresh local berries is particularly large.”
Picking your own strawberries from the strawberry fields is particularly popular with Styrians. Around 15 Styrian businesses offer adventure seekers the opportunity to pick their own. Overall, strawberry cultivation in Styria is an important mainstay for around 60 farms. The Styrian strawberries are cultivated on around 160 hectares, of which around 80% are outdoors and 20% in protected cultivation in foil houses. The strawberries that have now been harvested are primarily available directly from the farm, in self-picking fields, at farmers’ markets and in supermarkets. Local gastronomy is also increasingly relying on seasonal strawberries from local farmers.
