Heat wave in Austria: high temperatures in June: heat telephone back in operation
A heat wave is defined as five consecutive days with more than 30 degrees. This situation did not exist in Austria this weekend. “But one can probably speak of ‘hot’,” said a ZAMG meteorologist. Because in some places, especially in the west, the 30 degrees were exceeded on Saturday. The Ministry of Health meanwhile put the heat telephone back into operation.
Temperatures could rise on Sunday, especially in the Innsbruck, Lake Constance and Rhine Valley area. If the hair dryer, which blows into the afternoon, subsides, 35 to 36 degrees are possible. The weather expert did not want to make a record forecast, “but then we are in the upper range for June”.
Under the Free hotline 050-555-555 Experts suggest how best to protect yourself from the stress of high temperatures. “Only through initial precautions can health risks be avoided during hot spells,” said Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens). The heat telephone is a prevention offer with personal information.
“The climate crisis is increasingly becoming a health crisis in many countries around the world. Heat waves and temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are being recorded earlier and earlier, including in Austria,” said Rauch. “What is associated with bathing fun and eating ice cream for one person is a major health threat for many people – especially the elderly and people in large cities.” As the temperature rises, the cardiovascular system is put under strain, and the health risk should not be underestimated.
The heat phone is operated by the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) on behalf of the Ministry of Health and can be reached around the clock in summer.
