Florence, drought: Nardella does not sign an ordinance, Bilancino is almost full. Non-domestic use is prohibited in Scandicci
Different decisions of the mayors
FLORENCE – Regarding the lack of water “in Florence fortunately it is still good and
under control. I had a discussion with the general manager and with the president of Publiacqua. The Bilancino reservoir is practically full, thanks to the strategy we adopted during the year, that is to slowly release the water. In this way Bilancino will save Florence in a summer of those that
we can consider drier, more ‘torrid than the last 70 years “. This was said by the mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, speaking of the risk of drought.
“It will not be necessary, at the moment, to sign ordinances – Nardella then specified – however I would like to recommend to all Florentines to rationalize the use of water as much as possible”.
This, he explained, “also applies to the metropolitan area, then obviously every mayor has the power to sign ordinances, so I cannot interfere in the decisions of my colleagues, however the availability of Bilancino water concerns the entire metropolitan area”.
SCANDICCI – Nardella evidently referred to the Municipality of Scandicci where the absolute ban on the use of drinking water coming from the aqueducts for purposes other than domestic hygiene was established until 30 September. This is foreseen by an ordinance of the mayor Sandro Fallani, addressed to domestic users, in force from today, June 18.
The ordinance, explains a note, reiterates that it is forbidden to use drinking water for watering parks, gardens and vegetable gardens, for washing courtyards and squares, for domestic washing of motor vehicles, for filling swimming pools. , garden tubs, ornamental fountains and the like. The measure follows the need “to protect the drinking water reserves available for supply during the summer period, which is particularly critical due to the increase in temperatures, the scarcity of rainfall, the increase in consumption for tourist and irrigation activities”, and in consideration of the request of the Tuscan water authority with which the passage of the level of water severity from low to medium is communicated.

Ed – Those who are old enough will remember that, before the construction of the Bilancino reservoir, in 1985, in a very severe drought situation (the distribution took place with tank trucks on the street), the then head of civil protection, Minister Giuseppe Zamberletti, made build a temporary aqueduct, immediately renamed the tubone, which brought water from the Renai di Signa lakes to Florence.
