VIDEO. Toulouse: With the heat wave, the EHPAD Gaubert is on the alert
With the heat wave, nursing homes are implementing protocols.
In the Fer à Cheval district, in Toulouse, the Gaubert establishment is in the process of raising awareness among its residents. Management and caregivers are adopting new measures to minimize the risk of dehydration.
At that time, many are watching the TV movie of the day. In the middle of the afternoon, residents take advantage of the air-conditioned space offered by the living room of the EHPAD Gaubert. Full volume. Air conditioning too. Seniors have fun seeing new faces pass by. “We feel the freshness,” Thierry Cardouat told them. The director of ARS Haute-Garonne came with the prefect of the department and the mayor of Toulouse to visit the residents of the EHPAD Gaubert in the Fer à Cheval district.
With the heat wave raging this week, the elderly are particularly vulnerable. The Toulouse EHPADs then try to protect their residents. “The establishment is air-conditioned in all common areas, but also in certain corridors or in exposed rooms. We have set up awareness to avoid any dehydration, ”reassures Hélène Gautier, director of the establishment.
A heat wave that affects the most vulnerable
A few meters from the living room is the dining area. Tables are set up and some residents take part in a pastry workshop. “We have fans, lemon juice, no it’s fine, we’re not hot”, laughs a senior in the middle of preparing a chocolate cake.
Doctor Serge Bismuth, coordinating doctor of the EHPAD, has implemented protocols: “We had to make several categories for the beverage service. We have independent residents, those who need help and the most vulnerable. They must drink an average of 8 glasses a day”. The nursing staff then applies to ensure that the residents hydrate themselves. A float with water and fruit juice passes regularly.
“We must take all necessary measures”
The heat wave will last at least until the weekend. “It leads us to take additional measures. We exceed more than 21 degrees at night and 26 degrees during the day. We must do prevention and help the most vulnerable people, ”explains Étienne Guyot, the prefect of Haute-Garonne.
For its part, the municipality has also activated all the signals. Also visiting, Jean-Luc Moudenc, Mayor of Toulouse wanted to reassure: “We must take all the necessary measures. We have senior restaurants open and there are also people listed as vulnerable who we call regularly ”.
