The European elite meet in Toulouse
On June 17 and 18, Toulouse hosts the European Basque pelota championships in the pediment wall on the left 36M. An ideal springboard before the Biarritz Worlds next October.
It is the Basque pelota event of the year in Occitania. Toulouse is hosting the European Basque pelota championships in the 36M left wall pediment, from June 17 to 18 at the Argoulets sports complex. A fundamental competition allowing the pelotaris in the running to prepare for the world championships in Biarritz next October.
French people well placed to play for the win
Four specialties are on the program: Paleta Leather, Pala Corta, Cesta Punta by women’s team and Cesta Punta individual men. The pelotaris come from four different nations, namely France, Spain, Italy and Belgium. Even if the Italian and Belgian pairs are becoming more and more dangerous, the fight promises to be rough between the French and the Spaniards. These two flagship countries of the old continent have a head start.

On the French side, the biggest names in the discipline will not miss the competition. The licensee of Stade Toulousain, Sylvain Brefel, reigning world champion of the pala corta with Dan Necol, will want to win a European title in order to get into the bath for the world championships. Another Stade member is in the running. This is Étienne Trannoy, the current vice-champion of the world hope. In leather paleta, Mickaël Mangaman, vice-world champion and recently French champion, is one of the favorites.
At 15, the youngest player in the competition, Romane Mercadié, already quite a great. Reigning French champion in the cesta punta with Oihana Sorozabal, the Frenchwoman can go far in the competition. Thomas Urrutia, vice-champion of the world hope, can worry about the Iberian competition. An excellent test before the next international deadline, still in France, in Biarritz for the Worlds from October 23 to 29.
