President Niinistö: “There is no reason” to fear the threat of war in Finland News
The President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö answered questions from the audience in an interview with Radio Finland on Tuesday morning.
President Sauli Niinistö He told those who had listened to his radio interview that Finland had no reason to fear the threat of war.
“No one threatens us,” the president replied to the caller’s question, adding that Finland has been steadily increasing its security solutions throughout the spring.
On Tuesday morning, Niinistö participated in a Q&A event with the audience at Yle Radio Finland, where he answered questions about Finland’s NATO search for summer plans.
Niinistö answered a question about Finland’s pending application to join the military alliance, saying it was “impossible” to predict when NATO talks, which had stalled Turkey for weeks, could begin.
“We are ready to continue negotiations at any time through meetings, but they have not been very successful,” he replied.
Niinistö also stated that the Turkish demands were driven by a desire to raise awareness of their own concerns.
“Certainly one of the answers is that Turkey wants to make it clear that it has suffered a lot from terrorism,” he said.
Despite protracted negotiations, Niinistö added that during the spring, Finland has developed co-operation with several countries – including the signing of a joint security declaration with Britain in May – which has put Finland in an even stronger position.
However, not all of the issues in the one-hour broadcast were related to weighty political issues. Niinistö was also asked how he wants to spend his free time and tips on summer specialties.
