A tourist who came to win the bet at the Monaco casino has his wallet stolen, a man has been sentenced
The actions of the pickers in the casinos of Monte-Carlo? A nightmare for all players and an even more irritating nuisance when you have just won the bet!
This is the misadventure of a British tourist mentioned in the Criminal Court of Monaco in a theft file where suspicions weighed on a manager of Cagnes-sur-Mer.
Because on the evening of March 9, 2019, the “so British” lucky guy was so happy to have pocketed cash in the Café de Paris gaming room that he had forgotten his wallet on a table.
However, he realized this when paying for a drink. He alerted security immediately.
The usual good tactic of viewing the CCTV recordings showed two concerned individuals, relayed by the images of Monaco Parking when they left the scene with a Mercedes.
“It’s not something I usually do
to fly”
Pushed by President Jérôme Fougeras Lavergnolle to obtain a confession, one of the identified characters admitted his presence in this mythical place in the Carré d’Or, but he denied the theft of his wallet at the bar. “I picked up the wallet on the ground. I kept it between five and ten minutes. But I didn’t open it or take any money out. It’s not my habit to steal…”
For the magistrate, the person concerned, confronted with the video, had tried to remain discreet. “Remorseful after a while, you dropped him without withdrawing any banknotes. Yet you knew it belonged to the victim. When you were questioned you made signs as if you did not understand. On your record appear offenses for driving without a license, without insurance and narcotics.
“There were 700 euros in 50 euro notes…”
“Wasn’t it easier to hand over the wallet to security?”, launched substitute Emmanuelle Carniello. “You have taken something from someone else. There were 700 euros in 50 euro notes which have disappeared. The suspect is absent. But the offense is characterized by the exploitation of videotapes! Even if you have not recognized the theft! For having made the wrong choice, a fine of 600 euros without suspension.”
The defendant, married for not having succeeded in convincing the judges, repeated before their withdrawal to deliberate “that he always claimed to have just taken and put down the morocco”.
The court dismissed the embezzlement of the money and reclassified the facts as simple wallet theft. Sentenced to a fine of 500 euros, the manager left, partially cleared of malicious intent.
