Eric Nam blows Brussels away during ‘There And Back Again’ tour
On Thursday Eric Nam was at La Madeleine in Brussels with his ‘There And Back Again’ tour. The American-Korean singer is not a pure K-pop artist. But has clearly taken over some elements that are typical of the genre. Eric Nam played a perfectly flowing set that he talked together smoothly.
“For those who experience their first concert here tonight, the next one will only be worse”, Eric Nam immediately with the tone. And we have to admit that they will actually go to great lengths to match performance. Eric Nam provides his show with a lot of interaction with the audience. He writes his concerts and jokingly as “TED Talks with interludes”. Being a smooth talker shouldn’t really frekwen. He is a welcome guest on South Korean television and has also had his own podcast for several years.
Eric Nam
You can’t really call Eric Nam a K-pop star. He was born in the United States and was discovered on a cover that went viral YouTube† Nam was invited by the South Korean channel MBC to participate in the talent show Star Audition: Birth of a Great Star 2 in 2012. He finished in the top 5 there, but did score a contract with the agency B2M Entertainment. A few months later his solo debut. So Nam never went through the K-pop training that typifies the genre. Yet he has included some elements of it in his show. For example, during some songs there is dancing and the finger hearts fly around.
Eric Nam’s latest album ‘There And Back Again’ is the first that he released under his own label, aptly named The Eric Nam Company. Eric Nam has been an independent artist since last year.
Almost perfect set
Eric Nam joins the music world and although it was also about the tour around his new album, all his biggest hits were reviewed. In doing so, he proved that several of his songs are perfect for a party. That happened immediately opened up during the second number of the evening, don’t call mewhere the dancers (fan favorites Tristan Edpao and Pauler Lam) complete their appearance for the first time. Later followed the explosive diptych Echo and paradise and the tone was completely set.
The audience also plays an important role in the atmosphere of a performance. And that audience was clearly looking forward to it. Already at the opening act by Rhys Lewis, during the rest of the performance with Eric Nam, the screaming is with a simple hip movement. All the lyrics were sung along aloud, even the Korean one, though, as Eric pointed out, with a little less self-confidence.
Goosebumps
But besides being a showman Eric Nam is also just a great singer. He proved this several times during his one and a half hour set in Brussels. Somewhere halfway through the performance he only performs a few fragments from songs requested by the audience, accompanied by an acoustic guitar. But he saved the goosebumps moment all the way until just before the end with the highs and lows of the song wildfire†
Although Eric Nam’s songs are more than average about broken relationships, the positivity prevails. Which makes you, even after a closing titled I don’t know you anymore, going home with a feeling of euphoria. Because it has to be said, it was the most danceable TED Talk we’ve ever experienced.
