Members of the Swedish Coast Guard found a 200 km long and 10 km wide, unknown substance floating in the middle of the Gulf of Bothnia, according to SR.
Characterizes the probably spilled substance “enormous”, SR reported (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that the incident, in addition to emissions of mineral-based oil, was probably the largest of its kind, according to the Coast Guard.
Kalle AholaThe field director of the Western Finland Coast Guard District said on Thursday that the substance was discovered on satellite images taken about a day and a half ago.
“The Swedish Coast Guard has monitored the situation from the air. There is no security or even suspicion about what the substance may be, but it is probably not mineral-based oil, so there is no need to control measures,” Ahola explained.
Most of the substance had evaporated on Thursday, but samples were taken and analyzed right now, according to Ahola.
Based on the first satellite images, the trace of the unknown substance, which floats in the middle of the bay, was located between the Finnish port cities of Pori and Raumo.
Ahola said he did not know where the substance may have come from.
