The Netherlands achieves world record Laptop Domino
The guests and press present saw 1,653 discarded laptops on the extensive route. The first Laptop Domino was pushed over by Hugo (15) and Maaike (11) Schalk.
More than doubling the old world record
The world record means more than double the old Belgian world record. With this promotion, the OPEN Foundation wants to show that all appliances with a plug can be given a second life, for reuse as raw materials. In 2020, approximately 220 million kilos of discarded appliances or e-waste* will be collected, of which 5,477,000 kilos laptop*.
Exciting until the last laptop domino
Where normal dominoes have a similar shape with correct falling behaviour, this is not the case in the case of laptops. Old laptops of various brands, shapes and sizes were delivered to recycling centers and ended up at Road2Work where they are sorted and disassembled. Nevertheless, the team of the OPEN Foundation and Road2Work managed to achieve the world record. 15% of discarded laptops were given the color green: this symbolizes the percentage of laptops that make changes for reuse. 85 percent is recycled into new raw materials. The discarded laptops used during the world record are all recycled.
European leader in recycling
In addition to the laptop domino world record holder, the Netherlands is also a European leader in the field of e-waste recycling. Proper return of discarded appliances remains important. That is why the OPEN Foundation finds it important to draw attention to this time and again, sometimes in a playful way. Jan Vlak, director of the OPEN Foundation, known for their Wecycle campaigns and return points, says: “We ensure the correct handling of appliances and lamps in the waste phase. together we ensure the preservation of the value of raw materials, parts and even products.”
Erik Schalk, Director of Road2Work is extremely proud of the results achieved within the walls of his company: “Reuse comes before use is our motto. We are proud of the second chance we are giving to e-waste.”
Contribute; signing letter of intent
During the events, seven organizations in the waste sector and the repair sector joined forces. Road2Work, OPEN Foundation, ACV Groep, DAR, Miele, Repair Café International Foundation and Techniek Nederland have signed a letter of intent. They will actively contribute to the implementation of new European legislation ‘Right to repair’.
