Experts: Russia’s intention to withdraw recognition of Lithuania’s independence is completely nonsense
What is offered?
Yevgeny Fyodorov, a deputy of the State Duma of Russia and a representative of the ruling party United Russia, submitted a draft law to the lower house of parliament, which seeks to abolish the recognition of the independence of the Republic of Lithuania. He has no doubt that the law will be passed.
In the explanatory note to the draft law, J. Fyodorov explained why, in his opinion, the 1991 September 6 The resolution of the Russian State Council on the recognition of Lithuania’s independence “is illegal”.
“The USSR Law no. 1409 – 1 “On the Procedure for Resolving Issues Related to the Withdrawal of the Union Republic from the USSR”, as no referendum on withdrawal from the USSR was held in the Republic of Lithuania and a transitional period was set for establishing all disputed issues, the parliamentarian explained.
The president does not comment on the absurd
The presidency called the proposal of such a Russian politician absurd and refrained from making wider comments.
“We will not comment on the absurdity,” the presidential communications group told BNS.
Minister of Foreign Affairs: This is a beast-ruled state
Foreign Minister Gabriel Landsberg later said in a comment sent to the BNS on Wednesday that “only a beast-ruled state could have started such a war (in Ukraine) and started Russia.”
“I am not surprised that in politics one does not behave according to the order of the people. And to react very appropriately is to be responsible for defending oneself and together with partners, through diplomatic or other means, ”said G. Landsbergis.

D.Greenness: State recognition of the act of greater revocation
“It’s political schizophrenia, it has all the hallmarks of schizophrenia – it’s delusions and social isolation. I have a distance from the international community and its law. From a legal point of view, this is just great nonsense. ” 15min said D. Žalimas.
According to him, this can be assessed primarily because the act of state recognition is irrevocable – no state can revoke the recognition of another country.
“One could even ask whether the Russian Federation has the right to repeal Soviet legislation. One thing of the law should be said that the legality of an act is determined not by any provisions of the constitution of the Soviet Union that are no longer relevant, but by international provisions. This act was made in accordance with international law, it is fully valid and there is no reason to challenge it after more than 30 years. I will repeat it again, it is irrevocable, on its basis all the consequences have already taken place, “said D. Žalimas.
According to him, such proposals are distancing and constructing an alternative reality – both legal and political.
According to D. Žalimas, the basis for Lithuania’s recognition in Lithuanian-Russian relations is not even this 1991 m. September 6 d. An act of the Soviet Council of State recognizing Lithuania’s independence was adopted in 1991, but the 1991 Framework Agreement on Interstate Relations between Lithuania and the Russian Federation irrevocably recognized the Republic of Lithuania under the status of the March 11, 1990 Act.
“The status of the March 11 Act means that the occupation of the Soviet Union was illegal and no constitution of the Soviet Union applies to Lithuania the most – here is the act of Russia itself. It is, I emphasize, valid indefinitely.
The agreement may be terminated, but the first article according to which Lithuania is recognized is of unlimited validity. It is uninterrupted – it is in the law treaty, ”the constitutional news emphasized.
What can happen next?
According to him, realistically, after such steps, as diplomatic relations between Lithuania and the Soviet Union were established on the basis of this resolution of the State Council, which extended the Russian Federation, it would seem necessary to talk about the complete termination of diplomatic relations. That would be the only practical consequence, as that is the logical next step.
“If it is no longer legally, but politically, it is a mixture of Sovietism and Nazism, the Russian world or charisma the best example of an ideology where everything is based on the supposedly illegal collapse of the Soviet Union. Legally, there is complete nonsense here, “said D. Žimimas.
L.Kasčiūnas: Russia’s attempt to intimidate is meaningless
Laurynas Kasčiūnas, the Chairman of the National Security and Defense Committee of the Seimas, called Russia’s attempt to “bite” Lithuania “the appearance of a patient in the geopolitical space”.
“The patient is highly valued as a patient. He is crying, and we are consolidating our independence, we are members of the European Union, of NATO. Apparently, new patients are appearing in that ward, who are trying to compete with each other with absurd proposals. ” 15min assured L. Kasčiūnas.
According to him, Moscow is already showing that it is much weaker than previously assured, and has little leverage.
“We already see in Ukraine what they are worth. Such forces are being thrown out, but they have problems fighting not even against a NATO country. In NATO, intimidation of Russia already seems completely meaningless. “Finland is also trying to intimidate when it has expressed a desire to join NATO,” the politician said.
According to him, Moscow’s desire to “annoy” Lithuania may be related to the resolution of our country, which recognizes Russia as a terrorist state.
“I think it is an aggravation that we have firmly stated in the resolution that it is a terrorist country. This is the strongest resolution expected, ”said L. Kasčiūnas.
Political scientist K.Girnius: it is a sign of impotence
Kęstutis Girnius, Political Scientist, Institute of International Relations and Political Science, Vilnius University 15min said such initiatives by Moscow should not be taken seriously.
“They want to upset us and cause us to react, but I think that should be ignored. Even if they decide to vote and withdraw our recognition of independence, it will not matter. Therefore, I would not engage in larger discussions with them, “said the political scientist.
K.Girnius explained: Lithuania’s independence is recognized by the laws of Russia itself, international agreements are in force, Lithuania is recognized by all countries of the world.
“If Russia suddenly decides not to recognize it, it will not change anything. Moreover, Lithuania was first recognized not even by Russia, but by the Soviet Union, which existed at that time. Therefore, even under international law, it is not clear to me how the recognition of independence can be revoked, “said the political scientist.
According to him, such initiatives show desperation.
“I would say they offer stupid things. Will they not decide yet that the Grand Duchy of Lithuania did not exist? Lithuanian-Russian relations are now at a high level and I do not think they will improve any time soon. Even if such a proposal were approved in the Duma, it would be a sign of impotence – they want to harm Lithuania in some way, but they do not have serious means to do so, ”said K. Girnius.
