Near Toulouse, a town is testing the “school street” to secure its schools
During rush hour, traffic around schools can be difficult. To meet this constraint, the town of Cugnaux, to the north-west of Toulouse, is experimenting with “school street” around the Christian-Blanc school since June 3. The purpose of the maneuver is to calm traffic near schools in order to drop off and pick up children safely.
New experiment
After a first attempt at “school street” in 2021 around the Léon-Blum school in Cugnaux, a reflection on the redevelopment of public space has been initiated by the municipality around theChristian Blanc school. “A consultation with the school principals and the parents of pupils” has been undertaken, explains in a press release the town hall of Cugnale.
This implementation of devices to secure the surroundings of schools consists in prohibiting them from access to vehicles, in particular at the times of entry and exit of children. The idea therefore ensures a certain safety for pedestrians and cyclists circulating near the establishment. The initiative also allows develop soft mobility (bicycles, scooters, walking…).
What are the consequences of the “school street” in Cugnaux?
Since June 3, the experiment has therefore been carried out on the Christian-Blanc school group with a closure of access to school car parks at the times of entry and exit of students:
- between 8:40 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Monday to Friday
- between 8:40 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. -11:20 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday
According to information from the city hallthe announcement of the first tests was sent out in advance to parents and local residents so that parking was moved to the car parks located near the school.
An evaluation of this experiment will be conducted in order to measure the impact of this measure on the travel security everyone (parents, children, teachers, residents) around the school.
