Ivan Kramskoy (June 8, 1837 – April 5, 1887) was a Russian painter and art critic. Kramskoy is an outstanding figure in the cultural life of Russia in the 1860s-1880s. He was the ideologist of the generation of realist artists, according to corr. RIA Birobidzhan with reference to website KALEND.RU.
“Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy was born (May 27) June 8, 1837 in the city of Ostrogozhsk, Voronezh province, in the family of a clerk. He studied at the Ostrogozhsk School, where he completed the course with meritorious lists in all subjects at the age of 12.
In the same year he lost his father. He worked as a clerk in a large Duma. At the age of fifteen, he entered as an apprentice to an Ostrogozhsk icon painter and spent about a year in his studio. And when sixteen had passed, there was an opportunity to escape from Ostrogozhsk with a Kharkov photographer who was filming military exercises.
With this photographer, he traveled for three years to half of Russia as a retoucher and watercolorist.
In 1857, Kramskoy appeared in St. Petersburg and, not typical for a systemic art education, dared to apply to the Academy of Arts. He successfully passed the exams and became a student of the Academy.
Kramskoy is an artist of genre, capture and portrait painting, an inspirer and organizer of the Wanderers.
He created a number of portraits of prominent Russian writers, artists and famous figures (Leo Tolstoy, 1873; Ivan Shishkin, 1873; Pavel Tretyakov, 1876; Saltykov-Shchedrin, 1879 – all are in the Tretyakov Gallery). They emphasize the simplicity of the composition and the clarity of the figure emphasize the leading part of a deep psychological characteristic.
Ivan Nikolaevich died for work. On his last day, (March 24), April 5, 1887, Kramskoy painted a portrait of Dr. K. Rauchfus for several hours in a row in his workshop in St. Petersburg. Suddenly he turned pale and collapsed lifeless on the easel, ”the article says.
