Drenthe will bring European Championships to the Netherlands for the fourth time in 2023 | NOW
The European cycling association UEC has officially established the European Championship on Friday in the province of Drenthe. It will be the fourth time that the event has been realized in the Netherlands.
The European Championships will take place on and around the VAM mountain from 20 to 24 September 2023. At the top of the VAM mountain, the Drenthe sports commissioner Henk Brink confirmed the collaboration together with people from UEC, the Dutch cycling association KNWU and organizer Courage Events.
“In recent years, we have been able to organize the Dutch National Road Cycling Championships in Drenthe a number of times and the European Cyclo-cross Championships last autumn,” said Brink. “After that, we added another one and are now very proud that we can organize the European Championship road cycling 2023 in our cycling province.”
In the weekend of 24-26 June, this year’s National Road Cycling Championships will take place in Drenthe, with a race on and around the VAM mountain for the third time. In contrast to other years, the race for the professional cyclists is on Friday instead of Sunday.
The battle for the European road titles has existed since 1995 and has taken place three times before in the Netherlands: in Valkenburg and Heerlen (2006), in Goes (2012) and in Alkmaar (2019). This year the European Championships will be held in Munich, Germany.
