The summer season in Verona comes on and with the beginning of June the monthly appointment with Verona Antiquaria, the antiques, collectibles, modern antiques and vintage markets, cannot be missed. An unmissable opportunity to rediscover hidden treasures and think of original gifts to give for unforgettable moments.
Inestimable treasures that also guards the San Zeno district, the heart of the city of Verona. Visiting Verona Antiquaria is a unique opportunity to rediscover it. Among traditional objects and treasures of memories, the Basilica of San Zeno is the true story of the city of Verona, as it is dedicated to its Patron, celebrated a few days ago, on May 21st. Just to recall the anniversary, the month of June is dedicated to art, inspired by the saying: “Whoever has an art has a fortune”. And Verona is rich in this fortune in every corner.
San Zeno, who was the eighth Bishop of Verona, is depicted in the polychrome lunette in the portal of the Basilica, which dominates the main square. Represented at the center of the iconography as he tramples the devil, symbol of the dead banner, he gives the banner of the city to the municipal soldiers, which designates the young municipality just born, around 116.
Entering inside the Basilica, a second treasure can be rediscovered and admired: on the high altar a work of art, symbol of the Veronese Renaissance, is kept in all its majesty. The Altarpiece of San Zeno, painted by Andrea Mantegna between 1456 and 1459. It was the first fully Renaissance altarpiece painted in northern Italy, which inspired the Veronese school of Renaissance painters, leaving an indelible trace. In fact, it was defined as a revolutionary painting, which brought to Verona that Renaissance culture, made of interest in antiquity, of a precise sense of space, of prospective research, of monumental statuary.
The altarpiece represents a sacred conversation with the Madonna and Child in the center, crowned by angels, musicians and singers, and four saints on each side. Work that was the subject of the Napoleonic spoliation of the Republic of Venice and which underwent several vicissitudes during the 1900s, but which today can be admired restored after the works carried out in 2007, which have returned it to its ancient original splendor.
