The center-left government is taking over power from the populists in Slovenia
The Slovenian parliament voted for a new, center-left government, which replaced the right, which pushed the moderate nation of the European Union to populism.
Ljubljana, Slovenia — On Wednesday, the Slovenian parliament officially voted for a new, center-left government, which replaced the right, which pushed the moderate nation of the European Union to populism.
MEPs voted 53 to 28 in favor of the cabinet of Robert Golob, leader of the Liberal Green Party Free Movement and a former business leader who has only recently entered politics.
Golob’s freedom movement won the April 24 elections in Slovenia and defeated right-wing Prime Minister Janez Jansa and his Slovenian Democratic Party. Golob formed an alliance with two left-wing parties.
The new government is a combination of experienced politicians and experts, Golob told parliament on Wednesday.
“I am delighted to have such a good team, and I look forward to the coming weeks, months, years and mandates as I know this team will deliver good results,” he said.
Golob said the government will promote social equality, green energy transformation and reforms. Slovenians will be proud of the new government, he promised.
“I think in recent weeks it already feels like the mood is more relaxed, the tensions have calmed down,” he added.
Golob was referring to political tensions during the time of former Prime Minister Janša, who faced accusations of promoting divisions and restricting democratic freedoms. Jansa, a close ally of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has denied the allegations.
