Toulouse. Town planning: the announced transformation of the Arenas
The nerve center of public transport, the Arènes district wants to reinvent itself. A study is underway.
The Arènes sector is Toulouse’s main multimodal hub, where several modes of transport meet: metro, bus, train, tram. A very elaborate district where thousands of Toulouse residents meet every day and which has evolved a lot in recent years. So much so that the Metropolis is going to launch an urban renewal project to better coexist all urban practices by adapting urban planning, whether by modifying access or improving the fluidity of all traffic. For the time being, a study and observation phase has been entrusted to the company Alyce, the French leader in the collection of mobility data. The goal? Know the travel habits and optimize the accessibility of the sector while favoring freedom of movement. “We were commissioned by the Transitec design office to analyze the frequentation of the places and see how the Arènes district lives on a daily basis”, explains Julie Vegas, manager of the Toulouse agency of Alyce. To do this, a vast counting operation was undertaken with the use of cameras and artificial intelligence to better understand vehicle traffic, as well as the flow of pedestrians and bicycles at strategic locations. Parking space occupancy time was also analyzed. To facilitate the reading and use of data from its multiple sources (traffic surveys, household surveys, counts, connected vehicles), Alyce relies on the Mygis software developed in Toulouse, an online data visualization platform that allows communities, such as the Metropolis, to have personalized and transversal access to data with a global and interactive vision of mobility and traffic in the territory concerned. It is then up to you to choose the right solutions…
