A milestone has been reached with free education in Luxembourg
There is, however, a clear gender difference among tertiary graduates: a greater proportion of women aged 25-34 have completed tertiary education than men (47% women, 36% men ).
While the proportion of men with tertiary education has increased over the past ten years, the rate of growth has been somewhat higher than for women. As a result, the gender gap has widened slightly over time.
EU Member States have set themselves the target of increasing the share of the EU population aged 25-34 who have completed tertiary education to 45% by 2030.

Higher education graduate population aged 25 to 34 in 2021
Almost half of EU Member States have already achieved the 2030 target at EU level for this indicator: LuxemburgIreland, Cyprus, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Belgiumthe France, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Slovenia, Portugal and Latvia. On the other hand, the weakest parties were recorded in Romania (23%), Italy (28%) and Hungary (33%).
Looking at the differences between age groups in educational attainment in 2021, there is a clear age difference: 37% of the EU population aged 25-54 had a higher education level, compared to 22% of people aged 55 to 74.
