Conviction of two young people for a fan incident with shootings in Thessaloniki
A 26-year-old and a 29-year-old are guilty of attempted grievous bodily harm in a fan incident in eastern Thessaloniki.
Two young men were convicted from Mixed Jury Court of Kilkis to engage in fan episode with shotsin January 2021, at K. Karamanlis Avenue, at eastern Thessaloniki. A 26-year-old and a 29-year-old were referred to trial and sentenced – respectively – to 7 years and 10 months in prison (by merger) and 4 years in prison.
After several days of hearing, the judges, with a marginal majority (4-3), found the 26-year-old guilty of attempted grievous bodily harm, in a row, and the 29-year-old for simple complicity in this act. The former was also found guilty of damaging foreign property and illegal possession and use of weapons.
The Court did not recognize any mitigation, while it decided to release them from the Court of Appeal. The defendant with the largest sentence was also sentenced to the additional penalty of appearing in a police station every time his team (in football) plays at its headquarters.
The bloody incident had taken place at noon on one of the main streets of Thessaloniki. The “tangle” of the case began to unfold when police located the two victims, a few hours after the incident, in a private clinic in Thessaloniki, where they had applied for first aid. They suffered injuries to their legs and after the medical examinations that were taken to the city police headquarters, where they were called to testify about the incident.
Police officers of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence at Sports Venues took advantage of testimonies from locals and examined video footage from security cameras in the area to reach the identity of the perpetrators. They collected four cups from the scene, one of which was “stuck” on the front of a store.
In his apology, the 26-year-old gunman claimed that he shot on the ground out of fear, which was caused by the presence of the group of helmets moving towards them (he was with his co-accused). It is said to be preceded by a discussion, probably in an intense style, with people (of an opposing team) whom they knew. The same defendant apologized that he had no intention of causing harm and that the injuries came from outsourcing. The other defendant did not attend the trial and was tried by attorneys.
