why was the start made in Monaco?
The weather conditions forced the FIA and race management to slow down the start of the Grand Prix. But an all the more strange failure is also the cause.
Given the weather conditions, it was easy and logical to think that the rain and the condition of a track that was impassable for Formula 1 was the cause of the suspension of the start procedure of the Monaco Grand Prix 2022. Indeed, the extension of the fires was scheduled for 2:00 p.m. But the single-seaters only completed the first lap at 4:05 p.m. Was it a mistake of the race marshals who waited too long hoping that the conditions would be more lenient for the pilots, on an urban route such as that of the principality?
The FIA explained itself through a press release, to shed light on this one-hour report of the starting procedure:
“Race management was monitoring a heavy downpour which was rapidly approaching the circuit, and when it arrived during the start procedure, the safety car start and its associated procedures were implemented.. This was done for safety reasons considering that there was no wet track racing this weekend.
However, another obscure reason exists. A power outage, caused by falling downpours, affected signaling systems and signs around the circuit. This is why the FIA did not take any risks when sending the drivers to the track. Prior to the race, none of them had ridden in wet conditions. It would therefore have been tragic to encounter an incident on the track and not be able to warn them and have all the safety means available, as evidenced by the chaos at the end of qualifying.
This electronic incident is also the cause that prevents the race direction from authorizing standing starts from the start-finish line.
