Gasly had nothing to lose in Monaco
The Norman stops at the end of the first lap to put on intermediate tyres, which contrasts with the rain tires used by the rest of the field. A choice that allows him to go up since many drivers imitate him in the following laps, but come out of the pits behind him.
During the 12th lap, Gasly, then 14th, offered a superb overtaking on Guanyu Zhou, who had been blocking him for a few laps, in the descent of Mirabeau. Then two laps later, the Frenchman offered Daniel Ricciardo thanks to better grip on the exit of turn 12. Two wonders of overtaking that Gasly could not imitate during the stint on hard tires, remaining stuck in twelfth position behind Vettel until arrival.
Reclassified in sixth with Ocon’s penalty, Pierre Gasly was satisfied with his race, even if there were no points at the finish.
“We had nothing to lose. I decided to go through the pits on the first lap, because there was no point in sticking to the same strategy as the others. At first it was very difficult in these conditions, but we took risks and it paid off. » explains Gasly to Canal+.
“I managed to overtake, it was quite hot, not easy, but it made the race a little more fun from where we were starting. I’m a bit sad not to score points after we had a good race. » rejoices the Frenchman.
“I was happy that the rain was coming. When you start 17th in the dry in Monaco, there is not much to hope for so it was pretty good. We did very good things in free practice, I’m just disappointed for yesterday (Saturday), we made mistakes that we’ll have to correct because this weekend we had the performance to do better things. » sorry Gasly.
In the standings, Pierre Gasly is only fourteenth with six small points.
