Top Gun 2 breaks international film records, best opening day in the Netherlands | NOW
Tom Cruise has had a worldwide hit with his highly anticipated sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun. The action film, in which he plays the character Maverick for the second time, is the most visited cinema film worldwide this weekend. This is reported by various American media.
In the US, Top Gun: Maverick, as the film is called, is heading for a new record for Memorial Weekend, the last weekend in May. This record is now held by the third Pirates of the Caribbean to bring in $153 million in the five-day holiday weekend in 2007.
The Top Gun also breaks 2 records in the Netherlands. Distributor Universal Pictures announced on Sunday that Tom Cruise in the Netherlands has won the best opening day of 2022. This record was held by the Marvel film Doctor Strange, which grossed 572,000 euros on its first day at the beginning of May. The distributor is not yet able to provide final figures for the entire weekend.
The long-awaited sequel had its European premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last week. In Top Gun: Maverick, the rebellious pilot is given a special assignment by his old buddy Ice (Val Kilmer), now a General, to train a young gunmen for a very special and dangerous mission.
