The first three ministerial candidates overcame the first hurdle in parliament
LJUBLJANA – As hearings of ministerial candidates began in front of parliamentary bodies on Saturday, the first three candidacies were confirmed before the June 1 session of the National Assembly, which will vote on the entire ministerial team of the new Prime Minister Robert Golob. The candidate of the Social Democrats (SD) for the Minister of the Economy, Matjaž Han, announced that there would be no restriction of social contributions in the new government, but that companies could be helped in other ways, such as funds for development-oriented jobs. Matej Arčon, a candidate of the Freedom Movement for Minister without Portfolio for Slovenes Abroad, said that the priority would be to get personally acquainted with the situation on the ground to prepare an action plan, which will be prepared in cooperation with other ministries. Aleksander Jevšek, mayor of the Social Democrats, who is in favor of a minister without a portfolio for development and European cohesion policy, said that Slovenia would have to use all available EU funds for balanced regional development.
A retrial was ordered in the Mariposa botnet case after serving a prison sentence
LJUBLJANA – Code writer Matjaž Škorjanc, who has already served almost five years in prison for supervising the Maripos botnet in the late 2000s, will stand trial again after the Constitutional Court overturned a guilty verdict on May 5, 2013 and two higher courts. the verdict, which returns the case to the District Court in Maribor for reconsideration, reports the newspaper Večer. The High Court agreed with Škorjanc’s contention that the trial court initially denied him access to his case file.
Musicologist Primož Kuret died
LJUBLJANA – Musicologist Primož Kuret, professor emeritus at the Academy of Music, has died at the age of 86. He was one of the most prominent Slovenian intellectuals who, through his research and professional experience, made an important contribution to the reputation of the Academy of Music at home and abroad. More than 35 years ago, Kuret (1935-2022) co-founded the Slovenian Music Days festival, led numerous research projects and wrote numerous monographs, the work of which numbers more than 1,000 units. His research focused on the cultural history of Ljubljana, and he received a number of awards for his work.
The number of new coronavirus cases continues to decline
LJUBLJANA – A total of 260 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Slovenia on Friday, which is almost 50% less than a week ago. The National Institute of Public Health estimates that there are currently 4,974 active cases in the country, which means 297 daily falls. Both the 7-day average of new cases and the 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 people dropped to 298 and 235, respectively. Health authorities, meanwhile, have not released the latest numbers of hospitalizations and deaths.
