Gearbox change for Sainz and Pérez in Monaco
Ferrari plays it safe before the Monaco Grand Prix. The Scuderia will change the gearbox of Carlos Sainz, victim of a collision with Pérez at the end of Q3 on Saturday. The Spaniard, surprised by the spin of the Red Bull driver, could not avoid it. Sainz’s F1-75 was damaged at the time, and Ferrari didn’t want to take any risks before the race.
“After examining Carlos’ car following his accident and considering the force of the impact, we decided to change the gearbox as a precaution. The elements of the rear of the car which had been damaged were also changed. These changes do not result in deletion” announced the Scuderia on Sunday before the race.
The Italian team does not want to prevent the fatal error of the last season. At the time, Charles Leclerc, also victim at the time of an accident at the end of Q3, was unable to start the race. The gearbox was still faulty despite repairs the day before. This year, the Scuderia is playing it safe. With his new gearbox, Carlos Sainz will move into second place in the Monaco Grand Prix, behind his teammate.
On the side of Red Bull, same story. Pérez’s RB18 was badly damaged yesterday and the Austrian team preferred to change the gearbox before the Grand Prix. Like Sainz, Pérez does not risk a penalty for this change.
