Alpine F1 scores six points thanks to Alonso at Monaco GP
The Alpine team scored six points this Sunday at the Monaco Grand Prix thanks to the seventh place of Spaniard Fernando Alonso after a difficult race.
Heavy rain in the Monaco area minutes before the race at 3:00 p.m. activated the start twice before laps under the safety car were interrupted by the first of two red flags for the day. Once the race resumed, the two Alpine drivers used rain tires during a difficult first stint against other single-seaters shod with Intermediate tyres. Then, on a dry track, the two drivers put on slick tires to reach the finish and if Fernando Alonso managed to manage the deterioration of his rubbers and cross the finish line at P7, his teammate Esteban Ocon took the checkered flag in ninth place before receiving a five-second penalty applied after the race for an incident with Lewis Hamilton, which meant Esteban Ocon finished twelfth and out of the points on Sunday.
“Today’s Monaco Grand Prix was very eventful and it’s always good to come out of these races with points in the bag. As a team, we expect it to be a difficult weekend on a circuit with so many slow corners, which is not suitable for our car. » explains Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine, this Sunday evening.
“We had to dig deep all weekend to make improvements between Friday and Saturday, which not only helped us this weekend, but also bodes well for the future where we can take this knowledge forward by adapting our car to all types of tracks. »
“Both drivers had good races today to cross the line seventh and ninth respectively, which is probably where we deserved to be in today’s race. Esteban’s time sensitivity is tough as it was probably 50-50 so we won’t dwell on it too much and just keep our heads down and look towards the next race. I want to thank everyone in the team for their hard work after two very busy weeks crossing Spain and Monaco. We are going to take a little rest this week before refocusing on Azerbaijan and Canada. »
