Church in Mülln: roof structure in danger of collapsing – salzburg.ORF.at
The renovation of the church roof truss will take between three and six weeks. The fence will be erected on Friday, and next Monday a crane will be erected in front of the large cemetery gate and the extensive renovation will begin.
“The crane has to extend 40 meters so that it can reach all parts of the church roof. We are moving at a height where we also needed a permit from air traffic control because the crane is on the Müllner Schanze,” says the Müllner pastor, Franz Lauterbacher.
Rotten roof truss is noticeable in storm damage
Especially at the top of the church roof, some of the girders are so rotten that there is danger in traffic. The damage was discovered last year. “We became aware of storm damage, and after the third damage, the roofer said that the ridge was damaged. For years, water has penetrated the leak from the lightning conductor,” says Lauterbacher.
Ornithological surveillance compulsory
An ornithologist is also on duty at the construction site, adds the Mülln pastor: “A pair of kestrel nests in the tower in Mülln. They breed – and the young hatch just when we have the construction site. I have now received the requirement from the authorities that an ornithological observation must take place for the entire duration of the construction site.”
Passionate saxophone player: “Too loud for birds”
The kestrels nest every year in the parish church – this year, however, under the strict eye of the ornithologist: “She can sit on the Mönchsberg and observe it,” adds the pastor. Father Lauterbacher is no longer allowed to play the saxophone. According to the ornithologist, the kestrels need rest. “I’m not allowed to play the saxophone in the cemetery anymore – it’s too loud.”
Refurbishment costs around 220.00 euros
The costs for the renovation run to 220,000 euros, of which the parish of Mülln is likely to cover almost half, the rest will be covered by Michaelbeuern Abbey, the Federal Monuments Office and the State of Salzburg, among others.
Cemetery closed, church services take place
Entering the cemetery is also not permitted during the renovation work. The work will take place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. During this time, the stairs from the Müllner Hauptstraße to the church are also closed. A visit to the cemetery is therefore only possible on Saturday afternoons and Sundays.
Worship services in Mülln, on the other hand, can take place unhindered. On weekdays, however, access to the parish church is only possible via access via the church stairs.
