Transport Malta Fixes ‘Severe Weather Conditions’ for Construction Waste Enter Qawra Sea
Transport Malta blamed the “unexpected weather conditions” for construction waste that seeped into the sea along the Qawra coast last week.
The accident took place on Thursday 19 May, when at around 3.30pm construction waste was caught leaking directly into the sea by a resident concerned.
“This is the result of an unfortunate accident caused by unexpected severe weather conditions,” a Transport Malta representative told Lovin Malta.
Weather reports from May 19 indicate that the weather conditions were relatively mild, with high levels of force 4 winds during the day, which the Beaufort scale defines as “gentle winds.” to moderate ”.
“The contractor completed the excavation works last Friday. Unfortunately, due to bad weather conditions (as seen in the photo published with the article), the sludge curtain that contained the race at the construction site boundary was dismantled, and with so the plume started to come out, ”explained the representative.
“Currently, the contractor is collaborating with the ERA to do whatever is necessary to limit any damage to the environment. In fact, the contractor is cleaning up any debris that has washed the ground, but the strong waves in the area do not allow the diving operations required to properly seal the underwater curtain, ”they said.
Lovin Malta also reached out to the ERA but no answer has yet been given on the issue.
This is not the first time this has happened in this area, with residents reporting a similar incident back in February. The ERA had stopped the works, but it seems that the issue has resurfaced.
The works, which involved dismantling, rebuilding, and repairing work on an existing damaged slipway (PA / 04179/20) had been running for some time, in front of the road, which is known for hotels and her lidos.
