Timor- thanks for Portugal’s support in “the most difficult times”
“ANDOn my personal behalf and that of the Government, I greet you and wish you a good stay in Timor-Leste”, said Taur Matan Ruak after the English President at the Government Palace in Dili.
“On behalf of my staff and the Government, I wish you a good stay and I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all the affection, all the help that Portugal has given in the last 20 years, especially in the most pleasant moments”, he said.
Ruak, Taur Matan, spoke in the Council of Ministers room at the Government Palace after the first official meeting of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s visit to Timor-Leste.
At the meeting, on the Portuguese side, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gomes Cravinho, João and the vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic, Edite Estrela, while on the side of the council, the minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Magalhã and the head of Timorese diplomacy, Adaljiza Magno.
Taur Matan Ruak received the Portuguese President at the main entrance of the Government Palace, the place that hosted a unilateral declaration of independence for Timor-Leste, by Fretilin Revolucionaria do Timor-Leste Independente (FRETILIN), on November 28, 1975.
The two leaders embraced effusively before Taur Matan Ruak placed a tais, the traditional Timorese cloth, in blue tones over the shoulders of the Portuguese head of state.
