Letter to the editor – Use energy instead of wasting it
Rising energy prices are leading to the realization that using less energy would be a wise decision. To the “Liewo” question of April 17, 2022 – “What can be done against the rising energy prices?” – MP Herbert Elkuch gave a very good answer: “The only spontaneous countermeasures: save.” The parliamentary group of the Freie Liste wrote on April 20, 2022: “What we can actively do is reduce our demand, i.e. save energy and expand renewable, sustainable electricity generation as quickly as possible and thus increase our level of self-sufficiency.” On May 9, 2022, the “Fatherland” dedicated a page to the topic of “saving energy”. And unfortunately only housing is taken into account.
Julia Steinberger, Professor of Ecological Economics at the University of Lausanne, in an interview with Marcel Hänggi in “WOZ” (22_17): “Yes, the demand for change is always an element of any transformation. And the good thing is that in many cases the quality of life improves when resource consumption decreases – for example because people who walk or cycle or eat less meat are healthier.”
In Liechtenstein, we still have a lot of room for improvement when it comes to mobility. Because about 30 percent of those who work and live in the country have a commute of up to 3 km. About 50 percent of car journeys are less than 5 km. Politicians should use common sense to promote energy- and resource-efficient, strong modes of transport; i.e. that short/medium distances are mainly covered on foot or by bicycle/pedelec.
