The cars were all from San Marino, where there is an 8% VAT on the purchase, totally zeroed for re-registrations in Italy thanks to agreements between the two states. In reality, the vehicles, many of them valuable, did come from abroad, but from other nations, and they were gods clones of vehicles circulating in the small republic. The traffic was reconstructed by the Traffic Police of the Campania-Basilicata Compartment thanks to cross-checks on the cars, with which the “duplication” was discovered first and then the system devised to defraud the state.
The investigations were born when the documents for a re-registration of a car arrived on the table of the Motorization of Naples and which seemed to have been counterfeited. The investigations then started and it turned out that that same car was, at least apparently, still in San Marino. It was clearly a clone. Hence the targeted checks on other vehicles that had passed the same process, which led to the identification of 27 carsincluding luxury SUVs such as Porsche Macane, Audi Q2, Q3, SQ5, A3 Sportback, Range Rover Evoque and even sedans such as BMW Coupè, Mercedes A180D and 200D and numerous other cars for tens of thousands of euros.
By ascertaining the real origin of the vehicles, the agents ascertained that many come from Germany. With this mechanism, implemented thanks to the complicity of some Vesuvian car practice agencies, re-registrations took place without paying the 22% VAT due for importation. The operation led to a report on the loose for 25 people, held responsible, in concert with each other, for fraud and false attestation to a public official.
