Helga Pedersen Human Rights Moot Court – 10th Anniversary
Students from the University of Oxford (UK) have been declared the winners of the tenth edition of the Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition after beating a team from the University of Passau (Germany) in the final round.
- The prize for the best speaker in the final was awarded to Lorenz von Westerholt, from the University of Passau
- The prize for the best written submission from the respondent was awarded to the team from the University of Passau
- The prize for the best written submission by a candidate was awarded to the Université Saint Louis Bruxelles (Belgium).
The final round took place at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on 13 May 2022, with a panel of judges made up of personalities from the Court and several senior Council of Europe officials. 19 university teams from 12 countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and United Kingdom.) competed in a fictional case related to natural disasters and the Environmental Protection. The winning team got an internship at the Court. In total, more than 50 teams applied to participate in this edition.
The EHRMCC aims to give law students, future lawyers or judges, practical experience relating to the European Convention on Human Rights and its implementation. The competition is organized by the European Law Students Association (ELSA) with the support of the Council of Europe. ELSA is an independent, non-profit organization representing 60,000 students, located in around 430 universities in 43 European countries. Several Council of Europe countries have supported or contributed financially to this tenth competition, in particular Italy, which currently holds the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, as well as Hungary; the Netherlands, Spain and the City of Strasbourg.
