100 years later, the return of a practical idea
The Métropole NCA is possibly considering extending line 2 of the tramway to Monaco. A way to unclog the roads a little more. The idea is not that new.
This project, currently “under consideration”, was announced by Christian Estrosi during an interview with Nice-Presse Sunday May 15.
The mayor of Nice and president of the Métropole NCA confided to us “to envisage in the years to come an extension of line 2 of the Nice tramway in the direction of the Principality”.
This idea, which is debated, is not really new. A tramway line already existed between the two cities… In 1903!
This link was managed by the Tramway de Nice et du Littoral (TNL) company created in 1878 and closed in 1953.
Passengers can thus join the neighboring territory by the seaside via Villefranche-sur-Mer, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Eze and Cap d’Ail.
Originally on a single track, the line was eventually doubled. An extension to Menton saw the light of day in December 1903. The cars thus traveled the entire coastal road.
The maralpine sections were connected with those of the Monaco tramway company, a company founded in 1887 and activated by the TNL in 1909.
It was in 1931 that the company ceased operating the line little by little over the months. The installations disappear and the car enters this new road.
