Fright in Monaco: Charles Leclrec crashes a 1974 Ferrari and is consoled by the Belgian Jacky Ickx (video)
Stuck between the Monaco E-Prix at the start of the month and the Formula 1 Grand Prix in a fortnight, the Monaco Historic Grand Prix is in full swing this weekend. Bringing together old single-seaters, the race also had several prestigious guests this Sunday, starting with the Ferrari driver (and stage local), Charles Leclerc.
The 24-year-old driver was racing in a 1974 Ferrari in which Niki Lauda had driven. Unfortunately for him, his demonstration lap ended in the rail at the La Rascasse bend, causing some damage to the rear of the Ferrari 312 B3, as reported by the specialized site motorsport.com.He who currently leads the Formula 1 World Championship was still able to bring the single-seater to safety, but blamed himself for having experienced such a mishap.
Back in the paddocks, Leclerc crossed Jack Ickx. The Belgian automobile legend was one of the prestigious guests of this event.
“I lost the brakes. I lost the brakes!”he blurted out. “I braked, the pedal was hard, and it went to the floor. I was lucky to have it at that time, because if I had had it somewhere else, it didn’t wasn’t good.”
“I know. Don’t worry”, replied the Belgian, taking him in his arms. “No, but worry… The problem is that I got scared. I’m [pourtant] arrived normally in the bend”, concluded Charles Leclerc.
Last year, after taking a brilliant pole position, he was unable to start due to a technical problem following a crash at the very end of the session. In 2018 with Sauber and in 2019 with Ferrari, he was never able to see the finish, each time ending his home race with an accident synonymous with retirement. He will try to ward off fate in two weeks for the 2022 edition, but before that he will have to stop in Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix next week.
