THIS disease can return to Slovakia
Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has been working for several years to eradicate polio, it is failing. The WHO, on the other hand, has highlighted the incidence of infections in several countries, including Ukraine. It was the migration of Ukrainians in Slovakia that alerted Czech and Slovak hygienists. Can the disease spread in our territory?
Polio is an infectious disease of the nervous system that affects the spinal cord. It can also be given to an adult. Polio causes lifelong paralysis and sometimes death. The cause is a poliovirus from the group of enteroviruses – intestinal viruses. It is transmitted through the stool. Removed by compulsory vaccination in the Czech Republic as well as in Slovakia, but even so, according to hygienists, it is possible that we will get it again, states idnes.cz.
Hygienists have warned that its introduction to Slovakia is threatened in connection with the war in Ukraine and the migration of the local population to European countries. According to experts, there is no reason to panic yet, but it is necessary to protect children by vaccination. “In my opinion, the real risk of poliovirus introduction from Ukraine is very small,” believes that the head of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the University Hospital Ostrava Lenka Petroušová. “It is definitely important to follow the vaccination schedule for all children. We have a live vaccine that is part of the hexavaccine in the basic vaccination schedule. “ she added.
Vaccination is our prevention. In Slovakia today we have been vaccinated against polio 96.5 percent of peoplewhich gives us decent collective immunity.

According to the data of the Public Health Office (ÚVZ), we recorded the last case of polio in Slovakia in 1960. Hygienists have been regularly monitoring wastewater since 1970 in connection with this disease. They still control them today, even in localities where Ukrainian refugees are located. No case of polio in our territory has been reported since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine.
