Nadia Murad, victim of the Islamic State in 2014, told her story to Prince Albert II
On May 9, Prince Albert II received Nadia Murad, a Yezidi human rights activist, in audience at the Prince’s Palace.
In 2018, Nadia Murad won the Nobel Peace Prize. 4 years earlier, the young woman was qualified by the Islamic State before being detained for several months as a sex slave. When she flees, she takes the path of activism and acts against those who also murdered her brothers and her mother.
The Prince reiterated his support for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence around the world. The Sovereign also highlighted the possibility for Monaco to participate in various projects in the fields of education and health. The NGO Nadia’s Initiative will be put in contact with the organization Mission Enfance Monaco. The activist wants to rebuild hospitals and schools.

In addition to defending the rights of ethnic minorities and fighting against the use of rape as a weapon of war, Nadia Murad fights for the Yazidi community, to which her family belonged. On May 2, on Twitter, she recalled the daily life of Yazidis back in Sinjar (town where she herself was born, editor’s note) who must flee again because of armed conflicts.
The young woman offered her autobiography, “So that I am the last”, to Prince Albert II, accompanied by a pottery made by a Yazidi woman.
