Florence increasingly smart-city “New technologies as allies” – Chronicle
TourFor5G is making a stop today for comparison, in Florence by Fondazione Ottimisti & Razionali and Inwit: a moment of reflection and on the future of the city and the implementation of the 5G network and new technologies useful for the development of a smart city. The initiative, after Naples and Rome, arrives at Palazzo Medici Riccardi, where the mayor of Florence Dario Nardella, the city planning and environment councilor Cecilia Del Re, the president of the Florence Center for Italian Fashion Antonella Mansi will speak , the director of the Uffizi Gallery Eike Schmidt.
There will also be Giovanni Ferigo (photo), managing director of Inwit, the main infrastructure operator for wireless telecommunications in Italy with over 23,000 towers, of which 6,000 in central Italy.
Why is 5G crucial for the relaunch of the city?
“5G is made for the environment, for the context it lives in and can allow Florence to become a smart city without invasive interventions and saving the historical, artistic and cultural value. It is a technology thanks to which CO2 emissions are produced. and traffic, the city is made safer, infrastructures are optimized such as saving up to 20 liters of water per day per person. In Florence we have every 5-600 meters, so with the IOT sensors it is possible to monitor the pollution, pollen in the air or collect data that allow the city to be managed optimally “.
What was done in Florence specifically?
“We have two million investments planned, we have already made one, which includes multi-operator indoor wireless coverage of the Careggi hospital, of the Fortezza da Basso, of some private clinics, of The Mall of Reggello, of the Antinori cellars. a partner to make the city even more accessible, also from the point of view of the artistic heritage, thanks to an evolution towards the digital tower, collaborating with local administrations to remove the bureaucratic obstacles that slow down the installation of the systems “.
At an infrastructural level, are towers enough or is something else needed?
“5G is made available in outdoor environments through towers, which are always better integrated into the environment and urban furniture. To allow indoor coverage, distributed micro-antenna systems (Distributed antenna system or small cell) are increasingly needed, particularly suitable for: stations, universities, museums, hospitals. During the lockdown, we created dedicated covers, for example to 30 hospitals in Italy, including Careggi, in order to allow interaction between patients, staff and their families “.
Meanwhile, Inwit grows …
“Yes, it was another quarter of growth in economic and financial terms. Revenues grow by + 9.1% in organic terms and net profit + 56.6%. We expect further acceleration in the rest of the year. of business, in line with the 2022 objectives, to support operators and the digitization of the country “.
