RTL Today – Poll: Should bikers be allowed to cross the line?
In Luxembourg, the law prohibits motorcyclists from sneaking between vehicles during traffic jams… but in practice, few two-wheelers are patient. Should we denounce this behavior, or on the contrary have the law assessed? Participate in our survey.
But it’s marked black on white on the Grand Ducal police websiteon the page dedicated to motorcyclists:
- “In the event of a traffic slowdown, don’t pass car files blindly.”
- “Do not pass in the traffic jams on the highway.”
But honestly, which biker respects this rule? (Raise your finger, to see?)
Especially since many motorists translate the task to them, by shifting when a motorcyclist appears in the rear view mirror. A friendly gesture that is often rewarded with a small sign of the foot or the hand on the part of the motorcyclist, who can practice this “interfile overtaking” between the vehicles.
In a way, it’s as if there was a “third lane of traffic”located between the two main ones and normally reserved for emergency vehiclesbut that bikers happily borrow.
PROHIBITED IN LUXEMBOURG… BUT NOT ALWAYS WITH OUR NEIGHBORS
Should we let them? In Luxembourg, the law is therefore clear on the subject, it’s no.
But beware, the subject is far from consensus. In 2017, a petition in favor of the passage of motorcyclists between car files had registered more than 1,000 signatures in a week. Then Luxembourg decided that it was urgent… to await the conclusions of an experiment carried out in France. Finally, in 2020, the Grand Duchy had issued a negative opinion on the introduction of this interlaning circulation.
And this is still the case, we confirm a source at the Ministry of Mobility: “Indeed, interfile is still prohibited in Luxembourg, as in most other countries.” Exceptnevertheless clarifies this source, Belgium and a limited number of departments in France which allows interfile. But, we also learn from our source, the Luxembourg government is said to be in full “negotiation” to carry out a study on this.
In the meantime, what do you think? Should this law be kept or changed? Take our quick poll below, the results will be published in the coming days. You can also react in comments.
