L214 marches for the closure of slaughterhouses in Toulouse
It was, this Saturday, May 7, the ninth march organized by L214 in Toulouse for the abolition of slaughterhouses. Beyond a symbolic name, the association calls for the end of animal exploitation, hunting, fishing and breeding.
They were nearly 300 according to the organizers to walk from the Raymond VI garden to the François Verdier alleys in Toulouse. “We are abolitionists and reformists. We are calling for the abolition of exploitation, of animal suffering, but we know that we will have to go through different stages to arrive at a day when this exploitation will be illegal and we will look at our time as indignant at our humanity”explains Cécilia Auque, member of the L214 association.
L214 knows that the slaughterhouses will not close thanks to their march but the interest for them is to highlight their claim. Nevertheless pour the animal cause association is not lost : “Things are changing. Politicians are seizing it more and more, a party was even created in 2016. Big brands like Subway, Lidl and Brioche Dorée are coming out of intensive farming. In supermarkets there are more and more imitation meat or cheese. In the canteens have the obligation to offer a vegetarian dish per week. Things change. It’s more than hope it’s facts”.
So even if for some companies the measures for animal rescue have more economic than ethical stakes, for L214 we must encourage the greening of our food by putting pressure on these economic actors. For climatic, environmental and health reasons, the association considers that there is urgency.
“13 neuroscientists meeting in Cambridge revealed that animals have the same systems of consciousness that we do that allow them to feel pain, be self-aware and yearn for freedom. They have the same desire to live as us. From then on there is no more morality in killing them”, concludes Cécilia Auque. For the association, there is only one solution: to encourage alternatives.
