“The impression of being relegated to Ligue 2”, Gourvennec tackles the deleterious atmosphere at the stadium
After LOSC’s defeat against Monaco (2-1) on Friday at the start of the 36th day of Ligue 1, Jocelyn Gourvennec lamented the atmosphere which reigned at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium, against a backdrop of supporters’ revolt.
“We have the impression of being relegated to Ligue 2”: Lille coach Jocelyn Gourvennec lamented the deleterious atmosphere which reigned at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy this Friday, during the defeat (2-1) against Monaco at the start of the 36th day of Ligue 1. “We are ending the season in an atmosphere which is not pleasant, I find it a shame”, declared in a post-match press conference the northern technician, who, like the most of its players, was shouted down by a large part of the public.
The DVE, the main group of ultra supporters, displayed a banner “You are on vacation, we are too” and went on strike in encouragement. They also applauded the opposing goals and sometimes punctuated with “Olé” the successful Monegasque passes.
“We won a title again. When you’re not in Paris, you have to appreciate the titles”
“We did great things, we also had failures, but we don’t deserve that. I feel like we didn’t do anything. We won a title again. There were some one last year, another this season. When you’re not in Paris, you have to appreciate the titles” explained Gourvennec.
LOSC, crowned French Ligue 1 champion to everyone’s surprise in May 2021, won the Champions Trophy at the start of the season and then reached the knockout stages of the Champions League where it was eliminated with honors against to Chelsea, the defending champion. But the Mastiffs, who have lost four of their last five games, have missed the final sprint in Ligue 1 and are in a disappointing 10th place with two games remaining.
“It’s not a reflection of our season, we feel like we’ve been relegated to Ligue 2… We’re having an up and down season, with failures and great things and I find it disappointing that we brush it off with the back of your hand,” concluded the Lille coach.
