Filter Café Filtré and Brussels schools hold campaign for a sportier capital | Brussels
BrusselsOn Friday, Filter Café Filtré and Clean Cities, together with several Brussels schools, came up with the DO-THE-LOOP running campaign, to put the need for a sporty and liveable capital on the map. The collective advocates a permanent walking loop within the Pentagon, which will connect school streets with green and sports facilities.
The starting shot for the run was given by former top athlete Kim Gevaert. Afterwards, dozens of Brussels students took to the streets in an experience run, supervised by choreographer Benjamin Vandewall. With the promotion, the organizers want to create enough space in the city center for more sports infrastructure.
“All too often we still see the inhabitants of Brussels drive to a sports club or fitness center, because there are not enough facilities in the city center,” says Annekatrien Verdickt of filter Café Filtré. “Now that the new circulation plan is on its way, we do not want the free space to be used directly by terraces of tourist establishments.”
Refers to Verdickt to a traffic plan from the 1950s, date was actually provided to make it more comfortable for the car. “To this day, traces of it can still be found, such as lanes mentioned. You could cut those streets in half. One half can be softened, with space for greenery and exercise equipment. And on the other half you can leave room for local traffic and public transport.”
After the run, the vision was handed over to policy makers, including the Brussels Minister of Mobility, Elke Van den Brandt (Green), and the Brussels Minister for Urban Planning and Public Affairs, Ans Persoons (one.brussels).
