The 46th Annecy Animation Film Festival unveils its program
From June 13 to 18, the 46th Annecy International Animation Film Festival will be held, an unmissable event for world animation cinema. Ten films are in the running for the Cristal for feature film.
After a hybrid edition in 2021, the event returns to its usual format. The largest festival entirely devoted to animation cinema announces no less than ten feature films in competition, and can also count on a fine program of short films, special screenings, previews, films in virtual reality and other events of all kinds (exhibitions, outdoor screenings, signing sessions, etc.).
Among the films in the running to succeed the animated documentary To run away by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, winner of the Cristal for feature films in 2021, creators among others Le Petit Nicolas – What are we waiting for to be happy? by Amandine Fredon and Benjamin Massoubre, who give life to the famous character from Goscinny and Sempé (the film will be premiered before that at the next Cannes Film Festival); Charlotte by Éric Warin and Tahir Rana, based on the true story of the young German painter Charlotte Salomon, who died in Auschwitz at the age of 26; Forbidden to dogs and Italians, a film by Alain Ughetto set in northern Italy at the beginning of the 20th century and made entirely of modeling clay; or Goodbye, DonGlees! (Atsuko Ishizuka) and Misaki no Mayoiga (Shinya Kawatsura) on the side of Japanese animation. Ten films also presented in the Contrechamp section, represented in 2019.
Bridges of animation at the rendezvous
This year, the Annecy Festival does not intend to do things by halves and has planned a number of special screenings that will delight fans of animated films. The festivities will begin with the preview of Minions 2: Once Upon a Time Gru. Will also be presented Buzz Lightning (Angus MacLane), film from Pixar studios offered to the iconic character of the saga toy story, but also a first glimpse of the sea monster (Netflix), Secrets of my father by Véra Belmont, or even The Pharaoh, the Savage and the Princess, the next movie from master of animation Michel Ocelotwho will receive on this occasion a Crystal of Honor for his entire career.
Festival-goers will also be able to discover the first images of certain films, some of which are still in production, such as the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse (due out in June 2023), but also Puss in Boots 2: the last quest (Dreamworks), Ernest and Celestine, the trip to Charabie by Jean-Christophe Roger and Julien Chheng, Luck (AppleTV), strange world (Walt Disney), a VR experience by Wallace and Gromit or The most precious of goods, first animated feature film directed by Michel Hazanavicius.
