Slovakia is taking an important step in reducing its dependence on Russia
“An exceptional connection has emerged, ” literally so it was last year during the summer presented connection of the gas network of Slovakia with the gas network of Poland.
The competent people behind this project – including the representatives of the governments of both countries – did not seem to know at that time what an important step to take in view of the proximity.
At that time, there was no talk of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, and no one, except perhaps intelligence services, knew that the biggest war in World War II would break out in Europe a few months later, and that Putin would threaten everyone to disconnect. Or even that in the case of Poland and Bulgaria it will do so – albeit only briefly, as part of the threat.
Today, the connection with Poland, which can transport us gas from Norway or LNG (liquefied natural gas), for example, from almost all over the world, is viewed differently than last year. Current events definitely add to its significance and importance.
Launched in July
“From the Baltic Sea to the mountain tops, and further south of the continent, gas will be able to flow from the Norwegian continental shelves, or LNG, from around the world. Construction in this beautiful and difficult terrain is a good example that the common border on the Carpathian ridge is an opportunity for cooperation between our nations. ” commented on this link last year Polish Minister and Plenipotentiary of the Polish Government for Strategic Energy Infrastructure Piotr Naimski.
Gaz-System built this project on the Polish side and Eustream on the Slovak side. The connecting pipeline is approximately 164 km long. On the Polish side it is 61.3 km, the length of the Slovak part is 103 km – from the state border to the compressor station Veľké Kapušany.
Its capacity is 5.1 cubic meters in the direction of Slovakia and 6.1 billion cubic meters in the direction of Poland.

According to company representatives, gas should have started flowing from one country to another in the first quarter of this year, or in the first half of this year. They seem to achieve the goal with only a small deviation.
