Lungau: First experiences with refugees positive
social
For about a month, 60 refugees from Ukraine have been accommodated in Tamsweg (Lungau), among other places. And so far we have only had good experiences, says Mayor Georg Gappmayer (ÖVP). The locals are generally very willing to help.
There is space for a total of 76 people in the two refugee quarters on Tamsweg. Mayor Gappmayer explains that the municipal working group on the refugee crisis from seven years ago has been reactivated to look after them. Experiences with the war refugees in Ukraine have so far only been positive.
“People are very grateful for the help”
“There are no difficulties at all. Except for a few men, there are actually only women and children with us and they are very grateful for the help. We are very involved with all organizations and have regular joint votes. Things are working very well with the kindergarten and the schools, and the first of them will now also be taking on jobs. There is a new federal regulation here: if someone has a job, they can stay in this accommodation for another four months. However, most of them say that they want to go back home as soon as possible,” says Gappmayer.
The Red Cross monitors Tamsweg’s Ukraine Quarter during the day and volunteers at night.
